The shocking violence at Bondi Beach has left our community shaken and grieving.
ASoP acknowledges the profound hurt, fear and distress being felt within the Jewish and wider Bondi community following this attack. Antisemitism and racism in all forms must be unequivocally condemned — they have no place in Australian society, and everyone has the right to feel safe in their city.
Psychiatrists across the country are horrified by this act of terrorism and extend their deepest condolences to the victims, their families and all those affected. We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of life and the injuries sustained by people who were innocently celebrating Hanukkah. Events like this have far-reaching psychological impacts that ripple across the entire community.
Psychiatrists are ready to support anyone affected by this trauma, including those whose existing mental health conditions may be heightened by these events.
Amid the horror, extraordinary acts of courage shone through. Many witnessed shop owner and father of two, Ahmed al Ahmed, risking his life to confront the gunman and protect others — a reminder of the resilience, bravery and humanity that can emerge even in the darkest moments.
Now more than ever, we must stand together, reject hatred and resist fear. Let us lean on our shared humanity and ensure a society where everyone is safe, respected and valued.
Take care of yourselves and one another and please allow space for the wide range of emotional responses that may emerge in the days ahead.
With care and solidarity.
