ASoP brings psychiatrists' voice to National AI Mental Health Roundtable

Updated: Dec 7

The Australian Society of Psychiatrists (ASoP) had the privilege of attending the AI in Mental Health Roundtable at Old Parliament House in Canberra. The event was opened by The Honourable Emma McBride (Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention) and brought together leaders from across the mental health, government and technology sectors.

With artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly reshaping how Australians — particularly young people — seek support, this discussion was both timely and essential. While AI presents enormous potential, its pace of development continues to outstrip research, regulation, and public understanding.

ASoP was pleased to bring the voice of psychiatrists to the table, emphasising the importance of safe, evidence-based integration of AI tools into mental health care. We highlighted the need for clear regulatory frameworks, robust clinical evaluation, and infrastructure that ensures consumers and clinicians can benefit from innovation without compromising safety or ethics.

A sincere thank you to the Black Dog Institute for convening and facilitating such a thoughtful and solutions-focused conversation. Bringing together diverse expertise is critical as Australia works to navigate the complex intersection of AI, mental health, and public trust.

We look forward to contributing to ongoing work that ensures AI enhances — rather than replaces — the human connection at the heart of psychiatric care.
