Collective call for action: turning inquest recommendations into reform

ASoP has joined leading NSW mental health lived experience, carer and sector organisations — alongside Elizabeth Young, whose daughter Jade was killed in the Bondi Junction attack — in calling for concrete action following the NSW Government's response to the coronial inquest.

The joint advocacy, featured by ABC News, welcomed the Government's support for most of the Coroner's recommendations, but warned that "in principle" commitments on critical reforms — including supported housing — risk further delay.

ASoP CEO Dr Pramudie Gunaratne spoke to the ABC.

“We've already seen how the years of inaction have resulted in a tragedy, and even after that tragedy, if nothing concrete happens … then it's a ticking time bomb waiting for another tragedy to occur.”

Dr Gunaratne described the Government's in-principle commitments as "kicking the can down the road" and called for full funding of supported housing for people experiencing mental illness.

For ASoP, the message is simple: we already know many of the systemic gaps that need to be fixed. The time for further delay is over. Recommendations must now translate into investment, implementation and better care for people with severe and complex mental illness.
